South Mountain Wins Academic Decathlon

South Mountain won the Phoenix Union Academic Decathlon, November 9-10 at Maryvale High School and set the stage for another successful season.  The school has qualified for State in 22 of the last 23 years.  South’s 36,187 points beat Boulder Creek’s 35,308, with Maryvale and Cesar Chavez finishing 3rd and 4th in the 17-school event.  Connor Wade led the Jaguars with eight medals and the gold medal for the overall top scorer.  He won Gold in Economics,   Art, and  Music; Silver in Science and Language & Literature, and Bronze in Speech,   Mathematics, and Social Science, Wade  has been the Overall Individual Top Scoring student for an unprecedented third time in a row, winning as a sophomore, a junior, and now as a senior.  He will be attempting to be the highest scoring student at the Regional Competition in February for the second time; he came in 2nd overall in the Region his sophomore year, and won last year as a junior.


Other  South Mountain highlights included Benjamin Webb, with seven medals, and the gold for the top overall scorer in the Varsity division, and Anto George, who had three medals and was the fifth-highest scorer in the tournament in the Honors division.  The Jaguars showed depth, placing first in four events, second in two events and third in two events.
