A Note to Students
Well, you're here...or thinking about being here! You've chosen to enroll at Bioscience High School and by doing so, have potentially sacrificed a great deal of the comfort and familiarity afforded to students who choose a more traditional high school experience (if there is such a thing...).
As with any new endeavor, there are a few things of which you should be made aware. First, this is NOT a typical school. From the open classrooms to a lack of bells, BHS has stepped out of the mold of "school" and into something totally new - a learning environment that is innovative and transformative. With this in mind, most of the details that drove your day-to-day activities will be much, much different here. For starters, we really only care about what you are learning. Now, that phrase will carry a few caveats (qualifiers, expectations, "rules") but it really is at the heart of what we're trying to do.
Second, you will be saddled with a great deal of responsibility. From your own learning, to the use of a school laptop, you will be expected to take ownership of your academic endeavors. All of them. No excuses! We're even going to let you 'grade' yourself (more on that later...).Finally, you will be expected to think deeper and more critically than probably ever before. Now, that's not to say that you've not achieved great things up to this point, but we expect you to achieve even greater. Think back to the hardest you've ever had to work, and double it. That's a good starting off point for what you'll do here.
One last thing to understand (yes, we probably should have held off on that 'finally' earlier) is that we, the staff at BHS, are here to support you throughout all of this, but you must want it more than we do. After all, this is your education.Take some time to explore the materials on this site, and one FINAL bit of advice: whatever you put into your education is what you will get out of it. To achieve greatness, you must be great, and we're here to help you with that!
