Welcome and Introduction:
Welome to my district webpage! My name is Chamar Williams and I currently teach English 5-6 and 7-8 here at The Mountain! Although this is my first year teaching, South has felt like home to me for quite some time. During my undergrad at Arizona State University I was granted the opportunity to not only intern at South, but complete my student teaching semester here as well. I immediately felt supported and accepted by mentor teacher and the other teachers in the department, and knew that I wanted to be a Jaguar. I am committed to doing all that I can to see students grow and prepare them for college, career, and life.
The English 5-6 PLC has adopted Standards-Based grading principles. With that said, my gradebook looks a little bit different than most. All assignments and assessments are linked directly to the AZCCRS and students in my class receive a grade 0-4 based on how well they have demonstrated mastery of that specific standard. I understand that this concept might be a bit confusing to some, so I would be more than happy to explain via phone/email.
Culturally Relevant Pedagogy:
In my class I place an emphasis on teaching culturally relevant texts. This, in turn, extends to our class discussions and assignments. As a student in high school, I remember having a strong desire to learn more about issues and topics that were affecting my community in present day. Now that I am a teacher, I believe it is important for students to be exposed to diverse texts that contain characters in which they can see themselves. This enhances student interest which enhances effort, buy-in, and ultimately, levels of achievement.
