World Languages DepartmentInstructional Leader: Kathleen Kimura
The World Languages Department offers beginning level through Advanced Placement (AP) courses in both Spanish and French. An emphasis is placed on presentational expression (speaking and writing) and on comprehension (reading and listening).
All courses in the Spanish Non-Native content, the Spanish for Spanish Speakers content, and the French content are aligned with district, state and national curriculum standards. Students are encouraged to take World Languages for college entrance requirements as well as to enrich their academic portfolio and genuine appreciation for diverse cultures.
We now offer two rare language programs at Chávez. This is our first year with a German class! Longtime faculty member, Dr. Petra Schmid-Riggins, teaches it. We are also in our second year of offering the opportunity for our students to learn Diné! Mr. Alfred Yazzie has brought the Navajo language to Chávez. We are proud to be one of very few high school programs in the state of Arizona! We have created multiple pathways for different types of post-secondary success. Our students are AP superstars! We offer successful AP programs for Spanish Language and Culture, French Language and Culture, and Spanish Literature and Culture. Students who pass the AP exam become eligible for Arizona's enhancement to their high school diploma: the Arizona Seal of Biliteracy. Dual enrollment for Spanish 5-6 Honors and Spanish Language AP is now available through our collaboration with South Mountain Community College.Teachers:
