    Welcome students! I hope this will be a great year for you and that you will grow and enrich your lives through productive class work, making new friends, and becoming involved in the community of Maryvale High School.

    The following information is to give you a description of:
    1.What topics and information you will learn in Health Education.
    2.Goals and objectives of our Health Education course.
    3.Student and teacher expectations in our Health Education course.

    COURSE DESCRIPTION

    A course covering a core of curriculum consisting of wellness and self-concept, mental health, and stress management, nutrition and physical well being, substance abuse, diseases including sexually transmitted disease, first aid, and human sexuality. The course will develop each student’s awareness of community and personal health issues and community services that affect the student’s well being and his/her relationship with these issues as citizens now and in the future.

    TERMINAL COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

    At the completion of the Health Education course the student will be able to:
    1.Understand him/herself and others in terms of the interrelationship between the physical, mental, emotional, and social aspects of health
    2.Take an active role in improving his/her physical, mental and social behaviors.
    3.Make wise decisions concerning health problems.
    4.Be a selective consumer of health information and products.
    5.Be aware of the career opportunities available in the field of Health Education.

    COURSE EXPECTATIONS

    1.Demonstrate knowledge of sound health habits, wholesome male/female relationships, impulsive use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs and their social, psychological, and physiological effects.
    2.Exhibit an understanding of good mental health as it applies to dealing with everyday problems effectively.
    3.Understanding and implement safety habits, attitudes, and skills, in everyday and emergency situations.
    4.Demonstrate knowledge of the structure and function of the Human Body.
    5.Demonstrate through written class work and verbal responses:
    A. Acceptable levels of writing, including grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
    B. Reading proficiency of written materials.
    C .Understanding of lesson summary through verbal responses and written responses. ( this will include end of lesson Q & A, test/quizzes).
    D. Fitness activities will be explored.

    GRADING

    1.Students will be tested so as to demonstrate their mastery of the material covered in our health class.
    2.Students are responsible to submit in class/homework assignments by the assigned deadline.
    3.Students are encouraged to submit extra credit which could include:
    •A one page written report to a health topic, to include source of information, title of book, name of video, etc. In addition, a critical summary of the information as it relates to the students’ health.
    4.Criteria for Grading
    *50% of student grade is based on performance on Chapter tests and Quizzes
    *25% of student grade is based on performance on in-class projects.
    *15% of student grade is based on performance on coursework such as bell work and activities.
    *10% of student grade is based on attitude, effort and behavior.

    GRADING SCALE

    90-100 average = A
    80-89 average = B
    70-79 average = C
    60-69 average = D
    0-59 average = F

    ATTENDANCE POLICY

    1.A student needs to be in attendance in ALL their classes to fully participate in, and take advantage of the many academic, social, and cultural opportunities available to them in school.
    2.Absences can be made up through the completion of class work, and tests. This can be met by attending KKIS Monday- Friday 2:30 to 3:30 P.M. in room 602 or 601, or other times arranged through your health teacher.
    3.I will contact students’ parents regarding absences from class to assist in the students’ attendance and progress in health education.
    4.Students who accumulate a total of 10 excused/unexcused absences in any class
    may lose credit for the semester, subject to administrative appeal. A process will be in force to ensure parents are notified and interventions will be implemented to support student learning and success.

    NO PASS/NO PLAY
    STUDENTS MUST MAINTAIN A 60% AVERAGE IN THEIR CLASSES TO REMAIN ELIGIBLE
    TO PARTICIPATE IN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES.
