    Welcome to first and third year Spanish! These two courses focus on cultural comparisons, vocabulary building and useful grammatical structures. The main objective is to give students the confidence and skills to USE their language within their own community, in post-secondary institutions and throughout their professional careers.


    Here are 15 reasons why you should dive in to this beautiful and HIGHLY USEFUL language.


    Sra. Silva's Philosophy of Education

    Sra. Silva's classroom is run on the ethic of CARE. She cares for her students on both socio-emotional and educational levels and believes that every student is capable of learning the content taught, as well as achieving their post-secondary goals. Her classroom is considered her home and her students her extended family. 



    Sra. Silva’s C.A.R.E. system for classroom management is what keeps students engaged, interacting positively and learning to the best of their ability. C.A.R.E. stands for: C = positively CONTRIBUTE daily, A = APPLY your knowledge to use Spanish, R = be READY with what you need to succeed (supplies, mind and body) and E = act with EMPATHY.

    Disciplinary action, when required, will follow the infraction form procedures, with an attempt at parent contact on the second or third offense within the same week, depending upon the severity of the behavior. 

    Basic classroom rules:

    • No food in the classroom (candy and gum are considered food).
    • Only water is allowed for drinking.
    • Students must visibly wear their IDs at all times.
    • Students who arrive late must sign in at the door, or they will be marked absent.
    • Students wishing to use the restroom must sign out and in, upon returning. Students may not use the restroom the first or last 10 minutes of class.
    • Cell phones should be used for academic and/or emergency purposes only during class time.
    • Classroom textbooks are to remain in the classroom. Students wishing to check out their own copies may do so at the bookstore.
    • Defacing of books, writing on desks or damaging property in the room, as well as littering, may result in fines (for books) and most certainly a lunch or after-school detention, where the student will clean and/or organize the classroom.
    • Backpacks stay in the back of the room (along with cell phones). 



    • Sra. Silva's advisory offers days to focus on the refinement of specific standards, as 80% of classwork will be based off of assessed standards and 20% will be based off of practice work (see the homework category below). Monday is for Presentational Writing (PW). Interpretive Reading (IR) is on Tuesdays.  Interpretive Listening (IL) is on Wednesdays. Thursday is for Interpersonal Communication (IC) and Friday is for Presentational Speaking (PS).
    • Advisory is an academic time. Students who have mastered content and do not have their own work to do will be asked to lead study groups in class.



    Class work consists of thematic chapters that last 3-4 weeks. Each chapter is full of interactive board race games, interpretive reading (IR), interpretive listening (IL) interpersonal communication (IC), presentational writing (PW) and presentational speaking (PS) activities, followed by a chapter test. Occasional quizzes may be administered to gauge individual student progress. The main objective of class time is to get students to build up enough linguistic confidence and competency to use the target language inside and outside of class.



    First and third year Spanish with Sra. Silva has several opportunities for outside-of-class work:

    1) “Triples”: a way to practice writing vocabulary and self-assess progress in memorizing new words in the Spanish language.

    2) Review packets: These review packets are assigned one to two weeks in to each chapter and due near the end of the chapter. 

    3) Students wishing to receive extra practice or clarification on in-class topics can access their online textbook here, using their school log-in information.



    Every unit (composed of two chapters) has a project that is related to the theme of that particular unit. Projects include fashion shows, poetry contests, paper skull decorating (for Día de los Muertos) and much more. These projects may or may not require collaborating with fellow students outside of class.

    Note: Honors students will have regular projects that coincide with each unit, as well as a required Capstone project at the end of each semester.
