The Jack Kersting West Side Invitational was started in 1985. Then Alhambra tennis coach Jack Kersting, along with long-time Trevor Browne tennis coach Bruce Sharp, decided that going to the Kiwanis Invitational and losing quickly to was not good for their players. They came up with a plan to host their own tournament in which the west side Phoenix Union High School District schools, Alhambra, Maryvale and Trevor Browne would participate along with 1 other school. Eventually the other school would come exclusively from the PUHSD.
