The Sixth Annual Phoenix Union Foundation for Education Scholarship Dinner was the most successful ever, attracting 375 attendees to “An Evening For Education,” February 7 at the Renaissance Hotel downtown. Sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, the evening included silent and live auctions, student entertainment and awards. Proceeds go to the Foundation to fund post-secondary scholarships for Phoenix Union students. Student entertainment and presentations included singer Alan Ponce Duarte from North, the Maryvale Mariachi Group, pianists from Alhambra, Central, Car Hayden and Maryvale, Dancers from Cesar Chavez and South Mountain; JROTC units from Camelback and South Mountain, Trevor Browne guitars, Metro Tech guitars and table treats and decorations from its Culinary and Floral programs, North Chamber strings and the Carl Hayden Robotics team. Student speakers were Ruben Leal Mazon from Betty Fairfax, and Gustavo Loredo, a South Mountain graduate who benefited from a Foundation scholarship and is completing his degree at ASU. A new award for Counselor of the Year was given to Trevor Browne’s Allison Williams. Friend of Phoenix Union was longtime Foundation member and former president Dave Johnson, and the evening’s Master of Ceremonies, Frank Camacho, was the Alumnus of the Year. Camacho, a 30-year television newsman, is a graduate of South Mountain.
